Children at Home While Working?

Many people wonder what it's like to telecommute. Parents sometimes think telecommuting will save on the cost of daycare because their children will be home. I can tell you that both of these statements are highly unlikely.

Telecommute jobs are just like normal jobs. The only difference is that you're at home and you do not need to go out and face traffic. It takes the same amount of concentration and low noise level as an office job would. In fact, many call center jobs will deny your application if you do not have suitable child care or if during the interview they hear a child or any kind of residential noise in the background. Residential noises are cars, lawn mowers, televisions, etc.

I suggest that you really do some soul searching and find out if telecommuting is for you if you're using it just to be at home with the kids. If you're doing it to "spend more time" with them then you should be at the office instead because they won't understand why mommy or daddy cannot come help them while they're working until you can make them understand. All they will believe while they're infant to 6 or 7 is that you're so busy at the computer that you love the darn thing more than you love them--which isn't true, but try to explain that to a 3-year old. At least at a day care they are getting the needed attention by other kids and possibly the day care provider.

That isn't to say that all telecommuting jobs are bad for families. Some allow the worker to choose the time they work or allow fair breaks. I know of some that are so low key that the parent can sit in the same room with the children and work and make it seem like they're paying attention.

Whatever you do make sure your decision is fair to both the employer and your kids. Your employer expects you to spend the time working and your kids expect you to spend time with them. Try to balance the two if possible or let your kids play with other kids in a supervised environment while you're working. Both deserve it.

Are You an Attention Seeker?

Have you ever wondered if telecommuting is for you? There are a lot of reasons why people choose to telecommute and chit chat at the water cooler is not one of them.

Seriously, not many people can do it. I know of a lot of people who claim they would rather stay home and work but then find that they need the communication and attention from others. Personally, I enjoy working alone as I get more done, yet others seem to have that social need.

I also find that I end up working more and putting more effort into my work when telecommuting. I no longer have people asking me questions about work or their computers which makes me more productive. I prefer it that way. Some people don't. I'm sure that my middle child will be one of those types if he isn't a rock star first. He needs and craves the attention. Are you an attention craver? Then telecommuting is not going to work for you.

I am not saying an attention craver is not a good worker. Quite the contrary! Getting the attention they need helps them do better at their jobs. It's a personality trait.

So, before applying for the work at home job think really hard about it. Are you ready for the seclusion of no one else around? Are you going to need to talk with people and seek them out while you're working? At least at an office job they are always there bugging you, but in the telecommuting world you might end up trying to find ways to get people's attention and therefore wasting your time while working and once you don't find it then you'll be miserable.

Using Google Docs

Online Office Tools

Getting Started with Google

Google carries a useful assortment of tools available to the home office. Today we’ll feature the effectiveness of the Google Calendar.

Unlike products such as Microsoft Outlook and personal calendars, Google’s calendar is online and easy to use. It is also the perfect collaboration tool. It is compatible with ics calendars and other popular formats. It is also interactive with it’s own GMail system.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be discussing the features of GMail and Google Calendar. To get started, however, you must have a Google account.

To reduce abuse of SPAM and viruses, Google requires new GMail and Calendar subscribers to have access to a cell phone. When you sign up for service, Google will send a confirmation code to the cell phone for completion of the signup. You may have the confirmation code sent to either your cell phone or to a a friend’s mobile.

Another way to obtain a Google account is to receive an invite from another Google member. I invited my family members so we can collaborate on family events. Other choices would be extended family members, office buddies, and other telecommuters. Google gave me 50 invites to send out to recruit others. The only thing missing from that equation is getting paid for these members. Wouldn’t that be great?

To create your first event, click on the Create Event button in the upper left corner.

Enter the data as desired.

If you’re sharing your Google Calendar, be sure to click on Add guests. Enter the email addresses of your guests. If you want the guests to invite others, then click on the invite others checkbox.

One feature that seems to be missing from this window that would be helpful is the ability to choose guests from your GMail address book.

There are many more features we'll discuss next week. Until then...have fun Googling!

Design/Copyrighting

In the history of our exploration of the nature of matter, we have progressed from describing all matter in the known universe by means of many fundamental particles (the elements of the Periodic Table) down to using just three fundamental particles; the Proton, the Neutron and the Electron as sufficient to describe all the matter that there is.

We need you to describe something that is by its nature simple, but which can be described in either a complicated way or a simple way, depending on the insight and skill of the describer.

But it is worse.

Describing all matter as the interaction and combination of three fundamental particles is fine when you are talking to physicists (or in the case of web/mobile applications talking SQL to people who know Databases), but if your audience is the general public then you have a much bigger problem on your hands…but not one that is insoluble.

Your brief is to distill down the essence of our project, and make it instantly understandable to anyone, through the use of design and copywriting.

As soon as they hit our home-page, they should not only understand what we are offering, but they should immediately want to try it out.

We will need you to prove that you can do this, or have done something like this.

How to Find a Telecommute Job

So you're looking for a job that allows you to work from home?

Believe me, there are quite a few of them out there. Unfortunately it's like weeding through the hard candy to get to the delicious chocolates!

When I post the telecommute jobs on my telecommute job list blog I go through a lot of business opportunities and scams before posting the real stuff. Sometimes I might miss a good listing or I might accidentally post a scam or business opportunity. It's hard work, believe me.

The odds are probably 50 to 1 in finding a good telecommuting job out there. When you find a list on a system such as Craigslist or another online usenet feed, you're going to find a lot a junk, especially if the posting is free. Newbies to the online business opportunity system will quickly learn paying for posting doesn't get the results they need so the eventually stop just in time for another newbie to do the mistake.

To weed out these scams or opportunities, look for words like GET RICH or TIRED OF THE RAT RACE? Look for all caps or special characters. They realize that no one is actually looking for a work at home business so they need to get their post seen and using subject identifiers is a great way for these people to get noticed. Skip them.

Next, look for keywords of what you want to do. Do you like to chat? Build websites? Sell things? Look for these keywords and you'll possibly find what you're looking for. I've run across a few legitimate posts for "Home Typist Needed" because the poster didn't know of the Home Typist Scam. It's too bad because he probably lost a lot of good candidates by looking like a scam.

If they ask you to pay for something then stay far away. These are usually people who have compiled lists of other home business or telecommuting jobs. They're using the good intentions of the would be telecommuter to sell the booklet.

Patience will help you in the long run. Take on some short assignments and never stop looking for the longer ones or the full time jobs. Make sure you understand how long the position is for and what your benefits are. If you end up as an actual employee, see if they pay for your communication services such as your Internet or phone. If you're a contractor, then don't forget to write it off on your taxes.

Last - never give up!

PHP/Web Developer

Our client is a virtual organization. You will log in from your homes, a nearby office, one of their global office locations, or wherever you have an internet connection.

Who They Are
Our client is an organization of developers and engineers who are excited about the ever-changing world of software and technology. Their passion is building the next generation of consumer and business applications. They don't utilize the "factory" approach to software development, believing that coding is a creative process akin to an artistic endeavor. They also believe strongly in the benefits and sustainability of open source software and the philosophy behind it.

Open Salary
Their desire is to find and reward the best talent in the industry. As such, they do not set specific salary ranges for any position within our organization. Instead, they base salaries on the accomplishments of candidates as well as their salary history.

The Opportunity
Our client is seeking an experienced PHP developer to help create and maintain new content and functionality for both internal and external web sites.

Requirements
** Must have development experience on Debian Linux
** Must have expert level PHP 5 experience
** Must have excellent XHTML/CSS skills
** Must have experience with XML and SOAP style interfaces
** Must have excellent communication skills
** Must have excellent layout and design abilities
** Solid communication skills and English fluency are required for all opportunities.
Always A Plus
** Experience with Adobe Photoshop

Work Environment
** Work from anywhere
** Structured 8 hour day lets you have a life outside of work
** High-end Mac desktops and laptops with dual 30" cinema displays
** Executive desk with your choice of ergonomic chair
** Full benefits
** Work with some of the brightest and best minds in the industry
** We run a Linux, UNIX, and Mac OS X environment. We don't use Microsoft Windows.

Our client**s Philosophy
Bandwidth and software have finally reached the point where online collaboration online is as rich, or more-so, than in person. As such, we've begun building out the foundation for a new breed of distributed workplace.
Traditional workplaces try to build magic palaces, forcing everyone into one location and lifestyle.
That practice is about to come to an end, and open source is leading this change. It doesn't matter how intoxicating the palace is, every coder is part artist, eccentric and ideated. Big boxes and rules about where you can live are the antipathy of a coder's passions.

Our company is our collective vision of the next generation office environment. We are building the tools to empower a rich collaborative team software development experience: always available video conferencing, VOIP, IM, presence, and virtual white boarding, all connected through smart self-managing project tools. We live anywhere, dream anything, and code everything.
